In 1934, construction began on a herring factory In Djúpavík and just a year later, on July 7, 1935, it started producing both herring meal and fish oil. The fishing was very good and the factory ground gold. When the herring factory was fully built, it was by far the largest concrete building in Iceland. Even today it is considered huge, 90 meters long on 3 floors.

Djúpavík and other exhibition activities

The old herring factory has a history exhibition about the time of the herring processing but part of the factory is also used for art exhibitions.
