The Basque Centre presented in Djúpavík in August 2023

In August was the first joint event of the Basque partners, Albaola in Spain, Haizebegi in France, University Centre of the Westfjords and the Icelandic Basque Association. It was a promotional event for the Basque Centre in Djúpavík, a concert by two bands from Bayonne in the Basque region of France. The Habia trio and the Txalaparta duo performed Basque music in the old herring factory in Djúpavík on Wednesday, August 23. Denis Laborde from Haizebegi gave a talk on Basque music. Elfar Logi Hannesson performed in English a part of a play by Tapio Koivukari about Ariasman, which will premiere in June 2024. The Basque project was presented, where builders from Albaola will guide in building a Basque boat, “txalupa”. Elementary school students from Hólmavík and Drangsnes came to set up a workshop to make musical instruments from trash. The “txalaparta”, a percussion instrument, which was made on the spot an the musicians played on it.
